Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I need counselling?
Only you can decide whether you wish to try counselling or psychotherapy. Talking to someone confidentially who is not a friend or family member can help. You might want to gain clarity on an issue, change old patterns of behaviour, understand complex personal issues or manage stress, anxiety or feelings of anger. You might also seek counselling as a result of a crisis, or the loss of a loved one. Sometimes, you may be encouraged to try counselling by family members, work colleagues or your GP. Counselling offers a regular time and space for those in distress to explore their feelings and talk about their problems.
What happens in a counselling session?
There is no typical counselling session. It is time set aside for you, and what you talk about will vary according to your needs. You are free to discuss whatever you wish, from everyday events, worries, feelings, thoughts, sorrow, goals, memories and dreams. Counselling provides a safe space in which to explore your issues and can combine talking therapy with a more creative approach if you prefer.
How do I start counselling?
To book an initial consultation, please telephone or email for an appointment time. You can find details in the contact page on this website. The first session will give you the chance to bring in any questions, to find out more about how we will work together and to discover if I am the right counsellor for you. There is no obligation to continue beyond the first counselling consultation session if you decide it is not for you.
Will my sessions be confidential?
Yes, counselling sessions are confidential with some exceptions. My confidentiality policy will be discussed at our initial consultation session. Generally, the exceptions are that if you pose a danger to yourself or others, then the relevant parties will need to be notified.
How often are my sessions?
Sessions are weekly and usually the same time and day each week. Regular sessions are important for effective therapeutic work. This helps you make gradual and steady progress.
How do I pay?
Payment is made at the end of each session by cash or cheque. Payments can be made online and I can provide an invoice. You will be charged the full fee if you miss a session without giving 24 hours notice.
